We’re continuing with the Armor of God series that we started last week. For the next five weeks or so, we’ll be discussing each piece of armor in detail as they appear in the scriptures. Each piece does something different and so should be looked at differently.
“Stand firm, then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist…”
So, the first article mentioned is the belt of truth. It totally makes sense that this is first because the ultimate source of our strength and security in Christ is the true message of the Gospel. It is the cornerstone for all other beliefs and ideals that the children of God cling to. If you haven’t gotten the firm foundation that “God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son so that whosoever believeth in him shall not perish but have everlasting life” and that Christ died, rose again, and will return firmly rooted in your spirit, then your spiritual foundation is not as fixed as you might believe it to be.
Believing the true message of the Gospel—and I mean really believing it—will give you the faith and strength to believe and do just about anything. Once you know with all your heart that Christ loves you so much that he suffered and bled and died for you, there is no shame or guilt that can hold you back. When you know that Christ shed his blood specifically so that you can be forgiven for every wrong that you have ever or will ever commit, you can walk tall knowing that he has delivered you from blame and spared you from the consequences of your own sin. When you are free from the internal struggle that guilt and regret can place on you, you free your mind and spirit up to focus on more important things like growing in the knowledge of God and learning to love your fellow man as well as yourself. All of this freedom, security, and confidence stems from believing in one simple truth: God loves you.
It is also no accident that this belt of truth is meant to be worn around the waist. Truth lies at our center; everything else radiates from it. It is also the thing that holds everything else together and in check. When we find that our lives are beginning to unravel from the inside out, we need to return to that one truth. It will hold us together and eventually hold us up. The truth of God’s love is powerful. It is so powerful that it is the basis for our entire belief system. Do you really think that a truth so powerful that it upholds an entire faith and millions and millions of believers, many of whom are dying for it to this day, do you really think that this same powerful truth cannot get you out of the bed in the morning, put a smile on your face, and help you to love yourself, your family, and your neighbor?
