“The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.”
The more broken and trampled a person’s heart is, the harder it is for them to give it to someone. When we become wounded by life, we tend to guard ourselves against further hurt. We start to break ties to family and friends and avoid making any new connections. We build these walls around our hearts and cover them with barbed wire to protect them.
We take a chance whenever we decide to expose our hearts to anyone. A person has to be truly special in order to earn the right to have our hearts and see us at our most vulnerable. It is especially difficult for a person to open up whose heart has been misused and broken so many times. Opening our hearts to someone means that, for good or ill, we trust them. This is what God wants from us. When we finally decide that he is worthy of holding our broken hearts, we show that we trust Him with our most delicate and treasured possession. And let me tell you, trusting God with our broken spirits and hearts is never a gamble. We never have to worry about whether or not he will mistreat us, abuse, us, or abandon us. He will never lie or take advantage of us, and he can never break a promise.
Trust is the biggest sacrifice most of us will ever make. It is not easy to trust anyone with something so fragile as the heart and that is why God desires and treasures this sacrifice above all others. It is also why he requires this sacrifice of us.
